Editorial policy

Editorial policy

The rules we hold ourselves to, written down so you can hold us to them too.

Advertising never touches the research

Attorneys can advertise on this site and can be listed in our referral directory. No attorney, advertiser, or sponsor can change what a state record says, add a rule, remove a caveat, or influence which states we publish next.

Sponsored placements are labeled as advertising wherever they appear. If a page contains a paid placement, that fact is visible on the page, not buried in a policy document.

We do not sell rankings

Where this site compares or lists attorneys, position is never for sale. Paid enhancements to a listing are visually separated from anything we determined ourselves, and the criteria we used are published alongside the list.

Claims need evidence

Any number on this site, including costs, timelines, and outcomes, has to state where it came from, when it was collected, and what it does not cover. If we cannot answer those questions, the number does not get published.

  • We do not publish averages without a sample size and a date range.
  • We do not describe an outcome as typical unless we can show what it is typical of.
  • We do not use phrases like studies show without naming the study.

Use of AI

AI tools are used here for drafting, research assistance, and building software. They are not used to generate legal rules. Every rule is verified by a person against a primary source before it goes live, and the source is published next to it so the verification is checkable rather than a promise.

When we get it wrong

Errors get corrected in public, with a note on the record showing what changed and when. The corrections page explains how to report one and what happens next.
