State records

DUI rules by state

What happens to your license after an arrest is decided by state law, and the differences are large. These records hold the administrative deadline for each state we cover, the agency that receives the request, and the statute the rule comes from.

We publish a state only when its record clears our threshold: at least two primary sources, a complete set of fields, and a recent verification date. That is why this list is shorter than fifty. Coverage grows as research is finished, and the methodology page explains the standard in detail.

How to read these records

The deadline column is the number of days you have to contest the administrative suspension. It is not the deadline for the criminal case, which is separate and usually longer. States also differ on what starts the clock, whether refusing a test changes the answer, and whether the count is calendar days or business days, so the record page matters more than the number in this table.

Sources are verified against primary sources before publication. A record shows a named attorney reviewer only after licensed attorney review; until then it displays as source verified with review pending.

If you know a rule here is out of date, please tell us. Corrections to deadlines are treated as urgent because people act on them.
